Stump grinding is an option for removing the above ground portion of the stump. This is performed to improve the overall aesthetics of the final landscape.
Stump grinding does not fully remove the stump, as the remaining portion of the stump and roots will continue to decompose over time. This will eventually lead to some settling of the stump area over time. This can be a nuisance in lawn areas but is easily managed by top dressing the area with sand as it occurs.
Stump grinding produces an unbelievable amount of mulch and soil. Some or most of this is used to backfill the resulting hole. The mulch is normally left on site unless you request it to be removed or hauled away. (Additional cost TBD).
